The Underground Runners Society is the brain child of two complete morons named Dean and Tommy. The two self proclaimed runners wanted to develop a forum where friends could encourage, antagonize and enjoy the camaraderie of running and racing. Combining the sport of competition, the thrill of wagering and the fear of humiliation The Underground Runners Society was born.
Originally dubbed, The Underground Grand Prix, was composed of 21 'friends' selecting what they though would be their fastest times for a 5K, 1/2 marathon and marathon. Then everyone made predictions on what the others would run for those same distances over an entire year. What wound up happening was a way for other runners to enhance their love of running and spice up the joy of competition.
But this wasn't enough to satisfy was Dean and Tommy believed to be a massive void in the running world. So the controversial and self anointed, 'The world's most unusual and entertaining running publication . . . ever', newsletter was born. Titled The Ramblings, the newsletter set out to poke fun at running giants like Runner's World and elite athletes while making it's readers laugh. The monthly publication wasn't bashful. It possessed grammatical errors, spelling mistakes and easily came with a PG-13 rating. In fact swearing seemed to be a necessity for some of it's writers.
Co-founder and contributor, Tommy Neeson, answered the question of why the need to swear by saying, "Why the f%#k shouldn't we?"
Early on The Ramblings created a spokesperson by the name of Rev Chauncy Bentsworth III. The Rev served many purposes one of which being a filler when there wasn't much to write about. The newsletter began to grow a cult like following with subscribers all over the United States as well as Japan, Australia and Great Britain.
As the popularity of the newsletter grew, a metamorphosis took place. Bother by the fact that the original web site wasn't up to snuff, Dean push for reform. After several beers and some insight from The Cannibal, the name and concept for The Underground Runners Society was unearthed.
